the history of pillow fights 

No one is quite sure when the world’s first pillow fight happened, but it’s clear we’ve been using these squishy weapons as a way of blowing off steam since the early days. The 19th century saw a rise in pillow fighting among children in particular, back when pillows were almost exclusively stuffed with feathers that would explode out upon impact. Since then, pillows have come on leaps and bounds, and nowadays you can find perfectly plump pillows in all different shapes, stuffing and sizes.

On a professional level, Fight PFC was created in 2018 and is the only recognised professional pillow fighting sports league in the world. In fact, the organisation holds a Guinness World Record for the first pay-per-view pillow fight, which took place in Miami on January 29, 2022, and the tournament resulted in a title belt and a $5,000 cheque for the champion of the men’s and women’s events (1).

Pillow fights aren’t just fun – they're now a serious sport! As such, it’s best to identify you pillow fight type ahead of time. Here’s a round up of the different pillow fighting styles so that you can identify which best suits you: 

  1. The samurai: precise, controlled, and super clever. Every strike is well-planned and perfectly timed. You’re in it to win it.
  2. The ninja: quick and unpredictable. You wait for the perfect moment before striking swiftly and retreating into the shadows (or the sheets!).
  3. The acrobat: you jump, spin, and dodge the pillows like a pro – anything you need to do to make it impossible for anyone to land a hit on you.
  4. The tank: you soldier through the pillow strikes like a champion and focus purely on endurance, waiting for the perfect moment to counterattack and take the win.

To get you properly in the food for this year’s official Pillow Fight Day, we’ve listed some of our favourite pillow fight moves. Here’s how to secure a win: 

  • The dreammillswing your pillow around in circular motions to create a defensive barrier while delivering rapid-fire hits at the same time. 

  • The fluffercut – the perfect move to surprise your opponent! Hold your pillow low and swiftly lift it upwards for a gentle yet effective chin-tickling blow. 

  • The side snooze – A classic horizontal side swipe, ideal for knocking the wind (or giggles) out of your opponent. 

  • The nightmare knock out – Grab a pillow in each hand for double the action. Requires agility and coordination but leaves your opponent “out cold”. 

  • The lullaby lunge – Fake an attack on one side but quickly strike from another angle when your opponent thinks they’re one step ahead
