Leaves on the ground and the night’s closing in can only mean one thing, Autumn is in full swing and the countdown to Halloween and Bonfire Night has begun. With the temperature dropping, spending time outdoors can become increasingly less tempting (unless you wrap up in your favourite hat, scarf and gloves that is!) but Autumn is all about keeping cosy and bringing the fun indoors – aside from a few exceptions of course.
Whether you’re looking for activities to keep the kids entertained, an alternative date night or an excuse to get your nearest and dearest together. Here are some frightfully fun Halloween themed activities to keep everyone entertained!
1. pumpkin picking
One of the most popular fall activities, especially with the little ones. Pumpkin patches have popped up all over the UK and they’re the ideal spot to get a pic for the gram too. Wrap up and get your wellies on whilst you go on a hunt for the perfect pumpkin to feature in your Halloween window display.
2. pumpkin painting & carving
This one goes hand in hand with the first activity but there’s plenty of ways you can add to the fun. Get the kids to carve their favourite characters into their pumpkin and get a prize for the best one, we guarantee this will keep them occupied for a good few hours if done right.
If you’ve heard of paint and sip, we’ve got the perfect Halloween twist. Invite the girls (or guys!) round and sip your favourite wine whilst you paint your very own Autumnal pumpkin. The possibilities are endless, our favourite has to be the floral decorated pumpkins. And don't forget to make use of your pumpkin flesh with one of our pumpkin recipes!
3. movie marathon
Spooky season is the perfect time to cosy up inside and watch your favourite Halloween movies. Want to step your movie night up a notch? Why not tailor your snacks to the theme of the movie you're watching and for the ultimate comfort level, snuggle up with our latest multi-way duvet – shop here.
If your next dilemma is which film to watch, we’ve done the hard work for you. Why not take a peek at our Halloween movie countdown. It’s ghouls!
4. toffee apple making
Everyone’s favourite sweet treat when it comes to Halloween but what if we told you they’re super easy to create at home (and even tastier if we do say so ourselves). The possibilities are endless when it comes to toppings, keep it simple with the classic caramel coating or pick your favourite chocolate to melt down. If you really want to go all out add food colouring to your chocolate or caramel to add an extra special touch.
what you’ll need:
- Wooden sticks
- Apples
- Melted chocolate or caramel (you can find lots of recipes online)
- Toppings (sweets, chocolate, biscuits, sprinkles, nuts, edible glitter – the options are endless)
5. paint an autumnal door mat
Add a little personality (and spooky style) to your porch or doorway with a DIY door matt. Stencils are the easiest way to do this but if you’re super artsy you could do it fully by hand. Grab a selection of acrylic paints and a natural door mat (you can buy these from most homeware stores!) and get painting.
You could stick to a more autumnal theme or go all out Halloween core, it’s completely up to you.
6. wreath making
The latest craze in home décor, wreaths aren’t just for Christmas. Homes all over the UK are now blessing their door with seasonal wreaths throughout Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. Spruce up your entrance and brighten up your front door with a home-made wreath.
You can grab wreath bases from most craft shops or metal wire will work as a good base too. Grab some seasonal foliage and weave it through the wire or wreath base. Once you’ve got a thick circular wreath base it’s time to accessorise. Mini pumpkins, autumn leaves, cinnamon and pinecones are a good place to start if you’re looking for something Autumnal. You could also add some ghosts or spiders if you want to make it a bit spookier!
7. boo baskets
The TikTok trend that has taken the world by storm – gifting baskets around various holiday seasons. Boo baskets are all about getting someone you care about into the Autumnal/Halloween spirit whilst putting a smile on their face too. If you’re looking to keep the kids entertained this could be the perfect thing to get them to put together for their mum or dad, or if you want to spread the love to your partner yourself you can get shopping!
Boo baskets can be made for all budgets too. Some of our favourite items to fill them with include a cosy blanket, a seasonal candle, some Halloween chocolate or sweets and a mug to drink their favourite hot drink out of.
8. creepy crafts
When it comes to kids and Halloween, we all know that sweet treats are the main thing on their mind but what better way to get trick or treating ready than some DIY crafts?
The list is endless when it comes to creepy crafts but here’s a few to get you started. Create some DIY décor with Halloween paper chains, paper pumpkins and ghost painted rocks. They could even make their very own Halloween costume, just get a white bed sheet, some fabric pens and voila!
9. spooky s’mores
The sweet treat that was mainly big in America but has now made it’s way to the UK (and we’re thankful for it!). If you’ve got the space, create a campfire outdoors and get toasting to create the ultimate spooky s’mores. Or for an easier option, we’re certain you can make just as tasty of a treat in your air fryer or microwave.
What you’ll need:
- Sticks (if your toasting on a fire)
- Marshmallows
- Chocolate
- Sweet crackers or biscuits
10. cocktail night
Another adults only activity but it could also be made alcohol free with mocktails. Get everyone together for a Halloween themed cocktail night. Each person must create their own spooky, and delicious cocktail.
Need some ideas? We’ve got a couple to get you started below:
Halloween Sangria – red wine, orange soda, any fruit of your choice (you can cut apples into the shape of ghosts for a super cute touch!) and ice.
Autumn Spritz (a Autumn twist on the classic Aperol spritz) – Aperol, apple cider, ground cinnamon, apple, a cinnamon stick, prosecco and ice.
Halloween activities: our conclusion
Whether you’re looking for halloween activities for kids or adults, there are plenty of at-home suggestions for you to choose from here.
Autumn is a magical time of year and there’s so much seasonal interest all around us. So, while the weather has taken a turn for the worse, remember to make the most of the odd, dry day in between all the rainy ones. Get outside on frosty mornings (being cautious to wrap up warm of course) and experience autumn colour at it’s very best.
Or stay indoors and carve pumpkins, craft to your heart’s content, and make the most of special moments with friends and family. Whatever you do this Halloween, make sure it’s one to remember. Until next time, eve Sleep.
