New Year’s resolutions are little bit like marmite – we tend to either love them or hate them. Some people can’t wait to write lists of ambitious goals, while others roll their eyes and declare, “Why wait for January?!”
But let’s be honest, the New Year does feel like a fresh start, and it’s as good a time as any to make some changes – even small ones.
If you’re stuck for ideas or just fancy shaking things up, here are some realistic New Year’s resolutions ideas you might actually stick to. Spoiler alert: it’s not all about eating kale and running marathons!
our new year priorities
At eve, we're really committed to helping everyone live a better life more consistently. So much so, that we've created our very own well-slept club pillar system. Each of the four pillars outlined below should enhance your life in a small way. Follow all four and you may find that the overall impact is greater.
Here's what we'll continue to try and help you with year-round:

1. prioritise your sleep
Let’s start with a game-changer. We’ve all been guilty of sacrificing sleep for Netflix binges or scrolling aimlessly through Instagram at 1am. But here’s the deal: sleep isn’t a luxury – it’s essential.
A good night’s kip can boost your mood, improve focus, and even help you stay healthier. So, why not make 2024 the year you actually respect your bedtime? Whether it’s setting a consistent schedule, banning phones from the bedroom (gulp), or investing in a decent mattress, your future self will thank you.
2. move more (but make it fun)
You don’t have to sign up for an Ironman challenge to feel the benefits of exercise. The trick is to find something you enjoy. Whether it’s joining a Zumba class, going for a weekly swim, or even having a dance-off in your kitchen, moving your body doesn’t have to be a chore.
And if gyms aren’t your vibe? Walking counts too! Stick on a podcast, grab a mate, and get those steps in. Bonus points if you can squeeze in a scenic route with a coffee stop.
3. learn something new
Ever fancied learning a language, picking up a musical instrument, or giving pottery a go? The New Year is a perfect time to dive into a new hobby.
It doesn’t have to be expensive or time-consuming either – YouTube is a treasure trove of tutorials for everything from baking sourdough to learning how to knit. Plus, it’s a great way to break out of your comfort zone.
4. cut back on mindless scrolling
We’ve all been there: you open TikTok for “just for five minutes” and suddenly it’s midnight, and you’ve learned way too much about otters and cleaning hacks.
This new year’s resolutions idea is to set yourself a limit. Apps like Screen Time or Digital Wellbeing can help you keep tabs on how much you’re scrolling. Use the extra time to read a book, go for a walk, or just stare out of the window and daydream like it’s 1998.
5. cook one new recipe a week
If you’re bored of cooking the same five meals on rotation, this one’s for you. Challenge yourself to try a new recipe every week. It doesn’t have to be Michelin-star level – just something a bit different.
There are loads of free recipes online, or you could invest in a new cookbook (or dust off that one your auntie gave you three Christmases ago). Who knows, you might discover your next signature dish.
6. be kinder to yourself
We all have an inner critic – that little voice that tells us we’re not good enough, not productive enough, or just not enough. This year, tell it to pipe down.
Instead, practise being kind to yourself. Celebrate your wins, no matter how small. Didn’t tick everything off your to-do list? That’s okay. Ate the last slice of cake even though you said you wouldn’t? You deserved it. Life’s too short for guilt and self-doubt.
7. declutter your space
There’s something so satisfying about a good clear-out. Whether it’s your wardrobe, that drawer full of old cables, or the cupboard under the stairs, decluttering can make your home feel fresher and more organised.
Take it slow – tackle one area at a time. And remember, donating items you no longer need can make someone else’s day.
8. reconnect with people
Life gets busy, and it’s easy to lose touch with friends and family. Make it a goal to reconnect this year. Whether it’s a quick catch-up over coffee or a longer phone call, small gestures can make a big difference.
You could even send handwritten notes or postcards – they’re much more personal than a WhatsApp message.
9. do something that scares you
It doesn’t have to be skydiving or swimming with sharks. It could be something as simple as speaking up in a meeting, going to an event alone, or trying karaoke for the first time.
Stepping outside your comfort zone can be nerve-wracking, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. Who knows what opportunities or adventures could come your way?
10. start small and build momentum
Whatever resolution you choose, the key is to start small. Grand plans are great, but if they’re too overwhelming, you’ll give up by mid-January. Instead, focus on little changes you can stick to – they’ll add up over time.
final thoughts
New Year’s resolutions don’t have to be boring or impossible. The trick is to pick something that excites you, challenges you, or simply makes your life a bit better. And if you slip up? No worries. Every day is a new chance to start again.
Now, who’s ready to prioritise their sleep and become the most well-rested legend of 2024? Until next time, eve sleep.
