Here are some great ideas on how to spend the wonderful gift of time that falls between Christmas and New Year. Happy Twixmas everyone!

what to do between *Christmas and new year*: the great festive lull

Ah, the week between Christmas and New Year – that strange, blurry no-man’s land of time. Some call it Twixmas (because it falls “betwixt” two major holidays), but let’s be honest, it’s mostly just us wandering around in slippers, eating leftover turkey, and wondering what day it is. If you’re anything like me, you might spend it alternating between “I’ll just have a quick nap” and “Is it socially acceptable to start drinking at 11 am?”

But fear not! Here’s a list of ideas to make the most of this festive lull, whether you want to be productive, indulgent, or just downright lazy.

1. become the leftovers king or queen

Got a fridge full of Christmas leftovers? It’s time to channel your inner chef. Turkey curry, bubble and squeak, or a leftover sandwich that’s 90% stuffing and cranberry sauce – the options are endless. And if cooking’s not your thing, there’s no shame in just reheating a mince pie for the third time today.

2. get outside (yes, really)

We know, we know. It’s cold, it’s damp, and your sofa is calling your name. But hear us out: a brisk walk in the fresh air will do wonders for your post-Christmas slump. Head to a local park, take a stroll along the high street, or go on a scenic hike if you’re feeling ambitious. Bonus points if you manage to squeeze into your new Christmas jumper for the occasion!

3. have a decluttering spree

For the productive types, this is the perfect time to tackle the chaos that is your home. Got a drawer full of old chargers you haven’t touched since 2012? Or perhaps a wardrobe that’s bursting at the seams? Stick on a podcast and get cracking. It’s oddly satisfying, and you’ll feel smugly ahead of the New Year’s resolutions crowd.

4. host a games night

Whether it’s Monopoly (if you’re brave) or something quicker like Dobble or Cards Against Humanity, a games night is a sure-fire way to keep the festive vibes going. Invite friends or family over, break out the Quality Street, and prepare for arguments over the rules. Classic.

5. binge watch like a pro

If there’s ever a time to sit in front of the TV for hours on end, it’s now. Catch up on all the shows you missed during the year, or dive into a Christmas classic. Netflix, BBC iPlayer, and Disney+ have plenty to offer. Duvet? Check. Snacks? Double check.

6. plan your new year’s eve

Whether you’re heading to a big party, hosting a cosy gathering, or planning to stay in your PJs with a bottle of prosecco, now’s the time to sort out your New Year’s plans. If you’re still undecided, it’s also a great excuse to scroll endlessly through social media looking for inspiration.

7. indulge in some self-care

After all the festive madness, you deserve a bit of downtime. Run a bubble bath, slap on a face mask, or treat yourself to a lazy day with zero guilt. Or, if you’re still feeling the Christmas cheer, use the time to write thank-you notes for your gifts – it’s a wholesome way to show some love.

8. go sales shopping

Brave the crowds (or shop sales online, in your PJs) to bag some bargains in the post-Christmas sales. Whether it’s stocking up on next year’s decorations or treating yourself to something you didn’t get under the tree, this is the time to hunt for deals.

9. do absolutely nothing

If we’re being totally honest, sometimes the best plan is no plan at all. Stay in your comfiest loungewear, eat Quality Street straight from the tin, and embrace the beautiful laziness of this in-between time. You’ve earned it.

the bottom line

The days between Christmas and New Year don’t have to be a productivity marathon or a guilt-fest about all the chocolate you’ve eaten. It’s a rare moment in the year when life slows down – so whether you spend it tidying up, socialising, or hibernating, do it your way.

Now, where’s that leftover trifle? Until next time, eve sleep.
