deck the halls: how to make *Christmas bows* at home

The festive season is here and it’s coming up to that time of year where we’ve all got Christmas decorating on our minds! Pinterest, Instagram and Tik tok are all popular platforms for all things inspo and Christmas décor is no different. One trend in particular is on everyone’s Christmas list this year and it really has taken over – wondering what we’re blabbing on about? We’re talking about bows. Whether it’s the silk, velvet or hessian bows, they have proven to be the prettiest alternative to your traditional Christmas ornaments (not that they could ever be replaced!).

Not only do we want to cover our Christmas trees head to toe, but we’ve also discovered there’s an endless list of options on how to incorporate bows into your decs: you can add them onto your guests classes for their festive tipple, use them for tying up napkins, create your very own DIY garland and so much more. So ‘tie’ yourself in, because we’re going to give you the lowdown on all things bows this Christmas.

Christmas tree bows

The opportunities are endless when it comes to adding bows to your Christmas tree. You could buy some ribbon and tie the bows yourself (there are so many easy guides online!) or if you want to skip a few steps and cheat the system, you can buy ready-made bows in all your local supermarkets and home stores! Another hack we’re loving, is repurposing hair bow clips – what a clever idea.

If you want to go even more extra, why not tie a giant bow to the top of your tree and turn it into the star of the show!

Christmas door bows

Wrapping your door in a giant bow is the ultimate way to put on a festive front and welcome guests into your home. Does anything scream Christmas more than wrapping up the entrance to your home as if it’s a present waiting to be opened? We’ve seen this done in all sorts of fun and creative ways so why not add your own twist! Some of our favourites are polyester mesh, velvet and glittery bows. Although if you’re adding it onto your front door, it’s probably wise to make sure it’s a weatherproof fabric so it doesn’t end up all soggy (we don’t want that).

You can also buy DIY door bow kits online too if you want to save yourself the hassle of trying it out all by yourself.

Christmas hair bows

One of the OG’s in the world of bows. Who ever said only toddlers are allowed to wear bows in their hair was telling lies because they’re an accessory that can be worn by all ages! Over the past year, hair bows have made a comeback and they’re super easy to find and come in all sorts of different styles – bobbles, headbands, claw clips, you name it. Or if you want to save a few pennies and channel your inner crafty side, purchase some ribbon from your local craft store and tie them yourself. Easy peasy.

Christmas present bows

Bows tied up with ribbon on a beautifully wrapped present, creates the most magical looking festive gift under your tree and we guarantee that you’ll itching to open it on Christmas morning. If you’re the type of person who loves to go to town when wrapping presents for everyone, then this one is for you.

Christmas bow garland

If you’ve got expensive taste and want the designer look for less, then we’ve got you covered with this DIY dupe. Bow garlands are popping up all over the market but most of them come with a hefty price tag. We’re here to help because you can make your own for a fraction of the price and all you’ll need is some bows (any will do!) and a hot glue gun. All you have to do is stick the bows together on one end of the bow and continue the chain – you’ll be wowed by how spectacular this looks!

add bows to your wine and cocktail glasses

Is it really Christmas without a festive tipple or mocktail? Now you can really wrap up your favourite drink by tying a bow around the stem of your glass. This works with any ribbon of your choice and remember practise makes perfect when it comes to the perfect bow.

Top tip: go the extra mile and add a name tag onto each so that no one loses their drink!

Christmas bows: final thoughts

Whether you’re decorating your home, your tree, or even your hair, there’s a Christmas bow for every occasion! Get crafty this Christmas and bring the joy of the festivities to your home without the hefty price tag.

After all that craftiness, it could be time to settle down with a mug of hot chocolate and a good old festive book. Here’s wishing you all a very merry Christmas. Until next time, eve sleep.
